Product Description

During the period from around 1782 to 1866, when metal coinage was scarce in circulation and paper money as we know it did not exist, many private banks and corporations printed, issued, and circulated their own banknotes. Now referred to as obsolete or “broken” banknotes, these defunct notes served as an important means of currency in a cash poor nation.

Offered here is a rare, uncut sheet of 4 banknotes printed, but never issued, by the South Carolina Rail Road Company, which operated from 1843 to 1894. This impressive sheet includes two $1 notes, one $2 note, and, interestingly, one $3 note. The entire sheet is printed on bright, crisp paper with vivid gold and red coloring that is remarkable for its 150+ year old age. You will receive one sheet in the same exceptional condition as the one shown in the photos.
